ugly and lovely

How can we combine old and new media to express ourselves?
That is the question I am asking with this final presentation. I wanted to combine the old and the new uniquely. At school, we have access to a 3D printer and realized that this is a new medium. I enjoy acrylics and working with moving shapes. I managed to combine all of these by printing articulated slugs and then painting them. They can wiggle. They are cool as is but I wanted more. I turned them into jewelry so I could wear them and show off my artwork.

I was inspired by nature and also wanted to represent that. Slugs are real living organisms and exist in nature. I got to work with many media and got to play with colors in a way I haven't previously explored.

I did some research into the price of making these slugs. It is surprisingly unaccessible and can be expensive to be able to 3d print at will. I did the pricing of 2 different printers with the other supplies to make the slugs.

Slug pricing:

Ultimaker- 2500$
Filament- 20$
Jewelry set- 15$
Large set of acrylics- 30$
Mod podge 24 oz- 17$
Necklace 50 set- 10$
Brush set- 10$

2607$ total
Necklaces 10 dollars, earrings 15 dollars
105 necklaces and earrings sold to make a profit
210 total items

Slug pricing
Comgrow Creality Ender 3- 250$
Filament- 20$
Jewelry set- 15$
Large set of acrylics- 30$
Mod podge 24 oz- 17$
Necklace 50 set- 10$
Brush set- 10$

352$ total
Necklaces 10$, earrings 15 dollars
14 necklaces and 14 earrings to be able to make a profit
28 items total

As you can see creating is very expensive. Before going online i had to rush to print because I don't have access to a 3d printer anywhere other than school. Printing services can become costly. They are great for one off prints but if you want to have a production it isn't viable. Very quickly you will work your way up to the cost of a low end printer. For a high end printer I would have to sell 210 total items to make up for the cost of the entire production. For a low end printer it is only 28, which is still a lot of work to make, paint, and sell.

Making a Space

Making a Space For this AP we focused on making our space usable for school and a place we would want to learn in. We discussed what defines a classroom. We took a field experience to Millenium Park to investigate what defines a classroom. As a school, we asked what it means to be a successful student and teacher at GCE. We discussed what we expect from ourselves and our teachers. The student body brainstormed the traits of a successful student and came up with a social contract for both the students and the teachers.   Social contract for students: We will work in a timely fashion. We will be curious. We will pay attention to the work, fellow students, and teachers. We will be encouraging. We will participate. We won't distract.   Social contract for teachers: We will accept feedback. We will be accommodating and flexible. We will be patient. We will have one on one time. We will be excited to teach! We will be understanding.   Both the student body and the teachers agre...

Upperclassmen Sex Education

This was our first unit of social entrepreneurship. We learned about how businesses work and about people get along. We also learned about human psychology and different systems that can be put in place. This was a really interesting unit because I got to think about things that I had never considered. I got to think about how employees interact with organizations themselves to create a productive, healthy environment.

My mom and the ducks

I have always been unsure of what the meaning of life is. I used to spend my time before bed thinking about it. It was a question that used to really matter to me. At some point I decided that life didn't need a meaning. We are here and we don't know why, so might as well make the most of it. For me, fretting about it felt like it wasn't worth the time. It was causing me more stress than it felt worth. From what I could tell there was no true “answer.” Everyone has different ideas and you can exist without coming to a conclusion. This action project required me to push out of my comfort zone and think about it. For this action project I interviewed my mother after school, in the yard. She and I have always been close but I had no clue what her idea of the meaning of life was before this project. Growing up she taught me empathy and how to form my own beliefs but I didn’t know hers! I was very excited to talk to her about this. My mom’s life has had many changes and she was...
