Mister Rogers Neighborhood

In this we unit we learned about how audio is used to spread information and stories. We listened to a podcast and discussed how they used audio in an intriguing way. For this Action Project, I did my podcast about Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers Neighborhood. I loved watching videos from Mister Rogers Neighborhood growing up and my mom grew up watching it. I got to learn more about Fred Rogers and how caring and considerate of a person he was. I liked talking to my mom and hearing a story from her childhood I find really funny. My tone is often really flat so I struggled to have more emotion and variation in my voice.

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine, could you be mine? It's a neighborly day in this beauty hood. A neighborly day for a beauty. Would you be my...

Fred Rogers was the host of Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. A television show that ran from 1968 to 2001. He was a very influential person and helped raise many children with his show. She cared about showing kindness and respect and teaching kids how to process their emotions.

This is what I give. I give an expression of care every day to each child. To help him realize that he is unique. I end the program by saying you made this day a special day just by your being you. There is no person in the whole world like you and I like you just the way you are. And I feel like if we in public television can only make it clear that feelings are mentionable and manageable we will have done a great service for mental health.

LM

You grew up watching mister rogers neighborhood.

1:21

CM

Uh, ya definitely. Most kids from my era did.

1:28

LM

So, do you have any fond memories or stories about it?

1:31

CM

Um, well, one of my very first memories is of watching Mr. Rogers' neighborhood at my preschool. We would watch Mister Rogers neighborhood every day, I think that was right before nap time and I Thought he was actually inside the tv. You know tvs back then were a box and i thought his head was in there talking and so when he would talk to us, the viewers, all of us would talk back to him. Like he would say something like, “good morning boys and girls” and we would all say good morning Mister Rogers.

LM

It sounds like you have some, that's kinda funny.

2:09

CM

Ya it's kinda funny. It’s kinda cute to think about

2:12

LM

What part of the show did you like?

2:14

CM

Well, he had lots of people come visit and he would go visit different factories and go show how different things were made like crayons. He was really about being kind and he just had a really gentle way of talking that was sorta mesmerizing. I thinks kids really liked him in a way, I think they really trusted him in a way they could trust, say, captain kangaroo or bozo the clown who both seemed a little, well bozo seemed a little unhinged and captain kangaroo was sorta a crusty older guy who maybe seemed like he had no business doing a kids show. But mister Rogers had a real air of goodness and kindness, maybe like Jimmy Carter. Like he wanted to make the world a better place and he did in the way he knew how.

LM

Ya I remember seeing the crayon video, i think i actually watched it where it does the scrape at the top at the end.

3:12

CM

Oh really?

3:13

LM

Ya!

3:14

CM

Oh I don't remember that part, I just remember crayons rolling. But then there was another part of the show where he would go, there would be a little trolley and it would say “toot toot” and then it would go into the land of make believe and there were all these puppets that would talk and act out different stories. There was king Friday who was kinda, I don't know, I didn’t really like king Friday. And then there was this very witchy red nosed woman that I found a little scary. But there were animals, I believe there was an owl who lived in a tree. There were some nice things but I really didn't like the land of make believe as much as I liked Mister Rogers changing his sweater and talking to the neighbors and just being really nice to the kids he was talking to.

LM

I have actually seen a lot of the factory clips on YouTube.

4:02

CM

Why?

4:03

Because they are satisfying to watch. I like watching old mister Rogers factory tours.

4:07

CM

Well what about Mister Rogers himself?

4:10

LM

I have mostly just seen the factory tours.

4:13

CM

Oh, well anyhow he’s been gone for a while and there has been no scandal to come out. I think he was a genuinely sweet person.

4:24

LM

From what I did watch he always seemed like a really genuine person.

4:27

CM

I remember hearing he was a minister of some sort and I thought that was kind of funny. Imagine going to mister Rogers church and every Sunday he would be up there talking to you. I don't know if he was really, I don't know if that's true. Mabey it was a rumor.

2:42

LM

Maybe? It was nice talking to you

4:45

CM

Nice to talk to you too Louise.

4:47

LM

Okay, goodbye.

Digging our self a better shovel

Digging our way into a better shovel Action project on tools In this Unit we learned about tools and empathy. We redesigned the shovel to make it easier to use for those who have a hard time with balance. We designed the tool for those with balance and joint issues. The elderly often have that problem. Empathy is about thinking of others' situations and trying to relate. This project really focused on those who may not have as good balance as I do. I got lucky with that and not everyone else has. It's important not to assume everyone can do what you can. This tool is a wedge and a lever. You use your hand as a fulcrum and your legs as the weight to wedge the blade into the soil.  As a class we tried planting flowers with and without tools in the garden. This allowed us to see how tools work and what they do. We interviewed a gardener so we could gather more information about tools. We went to Home Depot to look a their tools and try some out. It was very eyeopening...

Sleep Away Camp

In the summer of 2019 I spent three weeks volunteering at a sleep away camp. I taught archery with a long bow and took care of 7-15 year old during the hours I wasn't teaching. I learned so much from this experience. I took responsibility and created fun activities for the kids to keep them entertained. I really grew up during my time there. Having to take care of so many kids and help them process their emotions was eye opening. The sunset there was beautiful and I made so many wonderful memories. The sunset one night before a storm. The archery range I worked at. A target I made for the kids that I named the Quacken.

Listening in the park

Field experience reflection We went to Millennium park as a school to listen to the Sonic Pavilion Festival. These were soundscapes in the Pritzker Pavilion. We ate lunch and then walked over to listen. It was our first field experience of this school year. I was very interested in what we heard. We were thinking about what makes a classroom and how we use the space and senses around us. I was very inspired by this field experience. I listened to two different soundscapes. The first one was Fulcrum by Kitundu. Before reading the program, I thought the soundscape he produced sounded like birds flapping their wings. This was really interesting to me because I have two pet birds. It also sounded like cars going by on a busy street and going over potholes. After I read the program I learned that Kitundu was inspired by birds. It was nice to know that I perceived what he intended. His execution reflected his inspiration. We were instructed to draw what the sounds made us feel. Since the so...
